reading journalism

Journalism is on my mind—more so than usual—because I did some freelance reporting this weekend. But I want to save that for next week’s newsletter, so for today, I’m sharing some journalism-related books I recently read and enjoyed.

The World She Edited: Katharine S. White at The New Yorker by Amy Reading

I have been a longtime fan of Katharine Graham, 20th-century publisher of The Washington Post, so now I have a Katharine Hall of Fame. This biography was just named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, for good reason. I loved learning more about White and The New Yorker.

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry

Sometimes, when giving feedback on my in-progress manuscript, people have said readers are uninterested in reading about the reporting progress. Imagine the vindication I felt when I started the most anticipated romance of the year and realized that much of it is devoted to the (fictional) reporting done by our (fictional) main character. Not to mention the main character’s name is Alice. Emily Henry really wrote this one just for me.

Love, off the Record by Samantha Markum

I pretty much devoured this enemies-to-lovers romance set in a college newsroom, but it did give me some stressful flashbacks to the cutthroat world of college journalism. (I’m kidding. Kinda.)

Overlooked: A Celebration of Remarkable, Underappreciated People Who Broke the Rules and Changed the World by Amisha Padnani and the Obituaries Desk

Thankfully, Alice Dunnigan did get a New York Times obituary when she died. But many extraordinary people have not because of discrimination. This book—and the series that led to it—seeks to correct that and memorialize the people who should have already been memorialized in the paper of record. Fun fact: I really love obituaries.

If you want to know what else I’ve been reading, you can see my list here. I’m anticipating reaching a certain milestone number this week…
