come on, girl!

Yesterday (meaning June 6; though it will technically be June 8 when this newsletter goes out, I’m writing it before going to sleep at the end of June 7, just after getting back to Lexington), my little sister Cayden got married.

I’m sure I’ll have much more to say on the subject and many wonderful photos to share from Cayden and Micah’s wedding, but there’s one little moment that has stuck with me over the last 24 hours.

At the reception, we didn’t dance for a long time but we had a good time. The bride and I were dancing together during one of the most perfect dance songs ever, “Shut Up and Dance” by WALK THE MOON. Just before the bridge, we instinctively leaned together to scream sing this line to each other: “Oh, come on, girl!”

It was a moment of pure joy—and one that echoed part of my and Cayden’s 2011 performance of “Speak Now” by Taylor Swift in her elementary school talent show. I mentioned that performance in my matron of honor toast because the little girl who sang a song about a wedding while wearing a flower girl dress grew up into a beautiful bride.

In “Speak Now,” in the pre-chorus after the second verse, Taylor Swift sings, “I know you wish it was me / You wish it was me.” When we performed it, Cayden and I turned to each other to dramatically and sassily sing the next line: “Don’t you?” I’m so happy that we look to one another for fun and for comfort and for laughter, and I hope we always will.

It’s hard to believe that my sister has grown up. I’m so proud of who she always has been and who she has become. And I wish a lifetime of happiness for her and her new husband.

Don’t you?
