hello, February!
February used to be my least favorite month. It was cold and bleak and lonely. When I got married two Februarys ago, I started seeing the whole month through love-tinted glasses. Now I pay better attention to the good things that had already been happening in February. So here’s my ode to this month, with some of my favorite things or happenings I’m looking forward to:
Today, the first of the month, is Sunday. The last day of the month will be Saturday. Perfection.
On Feb. 10, Loui and I will celebrate two years of marriage. We’ll to go Poor Richard’s Books and kiss at the spot where we shared our first kiss as husband and wife.
February is one of seven months that is abbreviated according to AP Style, as in: Today is Feb. 1, 2026. I love following a good style rule.
It’s Black History Month, which means people are more likely to come across role models like Alice Allison Dunnigan. A few of my to-be-read titles by Black authors that I hope to get to this month: They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib; Loved One by Aisha Muharrar; Black Women Writers at Work by Claudia Tate.
People buy flowers for people they love. I like to visit Kroger on Valentine’s Day to watch people make their selections and imagine who the flowers are going to.

My Gram and Pop got married on Feb. 12, 1982. Proximity to their wedding date is one of the reasons that Loui and I chose Feb. 10 for our wedding. It’s a sad day since Pop died in 2019, but I treasure my memories of the love he and my grandma shared.

Alice Dunnigan was a frequent and accomplished speaker. In February 1966, she spoke to a group of high schoolers to celebrate Brotherhood Week, which was held for decades to promote the elimination of prejudice in the United States. Alice advised the students “never to lose faith in the power of education, in the force of love.” Let’s carry that with us through February.
